Using VLAN’s to keep your IoT devices separate from your main network.

Using VLAN’s to keep your IoT devices separate from your main network.

Just over a month ago I decided it was time to  upgrade my home network and get rid of those troublesome consumer APs and routers that had numerous security flaws on them.  I went with Ubiquiti Networks as I liked the price point, and the options I had with the firewall, AP’s, and switches.  The switches also gave me the ability to use VLANs without costing a fortune either.  I also have a handful of IoT devices that may or may not...

Sophos UTM Firewall

Sophos UTM Firewall

I have been wanting to upgrade from my PIX 515E firewall for some time now.  I was originally looking into an ASA 5510, however seeing this is for my home network it is hard to justify the costs of such devices, even purchased off eBay.  I looked into other vendors as well, and while many of the devices are “doable” in cost, although still stretching it in the budget, it is the licensing that always gets me.  Many of them...

CCNA Security Lab update

CCNA Security Lab update

I am continuing to update my CCNA Security Lab and nearly have everything I need to go through all the Cisco Labs for the exam.  The equipment will also serve as the foundation of my CCNP Security Lab once I pass the CCNA Security exam this spring.  The last piece of equipment I need to complete the current lab is an ASA 5510, this one will be more difficult as they are not inexpensive as a switch or a router would be for the same lab. The...

CCNA Security Lab

Cisco Security Lab As I am quickly approaching the day when I will take my CCNA Security exam I wanted to get more hands on experience with actual Cisco gear.  Something that I could try out everything I have learned, mess things up really bad, fix the problems and see how secure I can make the test network. My previous lab had most of what I needed, however I needed to mainly upgrade my routers as they just wouldn’t cut it for what...

Cisco Configuration Professional and Internet Explorer 10 and newer

I noticed when using Cisco Configuration Professional it stopped working properly after I upgraded to IE 10.  Initially I resolved the issue by just downgrading back down to IE 9, however seeing I am using Windows 8.1 recently the IE version is now up to 11.  The problem you will notice with IE 10 and up is that only a small fraction of the screen is viewable, making the program unusable. The solution to this odd problem is quite simple...

CCNA Security

I finally have some extra time to continue studying for my CCNA Security certificate.  I wanted to be finished with the book before my classes start again in January, so I figured if I do two chapters a day I will do just that.  Much of it is just a review as I have had experience using Cisco Firewalls in a production environment over the past year.  I also have my Cisco routers, switches and firewalls in my home lab that I use on a day to...
